Calabar Continues To Witness Strings Of Armed Robbery

The city of Calabar, the Cross River State capital, has in recent times witnessed increased incidences of robbery and other vices with the security agencies barely able to respond effectively.
Reports gathered by CrossRiverWatch indicate that within last week (19th – 25th June, 2016) Target road in Calabar South witnessed straight four days (Monday – Thursday back-to-back) broad day light robbery with little or no intervention from security operatives.
At about 1:40pm Tuesday 28th June, 2016 a gang of about five robbers robbed some persons of their valuables around Ekoson oil by Manye Avenue and few minutes later another gang which eye witness say are five in number robbed motorists of their valuables including phones and money and finally dispossessed someone of a SUV at Marian Hill by Bateba before the police could arrive the scene.
The daredevils, brandishing dangerous weapons had stood at Marian Hill where the car they were earlier driving had developed a fault, they came down, robbed passers-by of their valuables, then stopped a driver who was passing, threw him out then drove off.
After about one hour from the Marian Hill incident there was another robbery at a shop at Ndidem Usang Iso road close to Crunches fast food. But there was no eye witness to give details of the situation.
Same day another robbery was witnessed around Udemsco Mayne Avenue at about 3pm with another at Total filling station Yellow Duke by Ekpo Abasi.
But as these incidents keep rolling by everyday, the security agencies have not responded effectively in a manner that should guarantee public confidence but the Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Irene Itohan said the police was on top of the situation and assured Cross Riverians that the police was capable of ensuring their safety.

The deceased, Obele Wilson, a final year engineering undergraduate student of Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Amasoma, was in the bank premises when the gang broke in.

Wilson, according to the Punch, was helping admission seekers to process ND screening forms for a fee inside the bank.

Sports minister Dalung rules out NFF's decision to appoint a foreign coach for Super Eagles

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIAtvqN_W_uoa8qVRZu4r3yjkCdDOHeWk1dJ4k0wy4tE5AaTUergaRM0tCxS6bU1W0mk7uwfGGWh3eo5LvLOUWpYgzJMpLcXjD3hIH7BGuxT779IoRMjG-kTk6PWEMJ1_5dl9moRdElTRz/s400/mj.png

Nigeria's Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has ruled out the NFF's decision to appoint a foreign coach for the Super Eagles to help qualify the country's senior national team to Russia 2018 World Cup, because the football body cannot even pay it's home grown coaches.

The NFF had drawn up a list of foreign coaches to handle the Super Eagles but the sports minister has questioned the rationale behind this, describing it “a fundamental contradiction not easy to swallow”.
The minister however said that using local coaches was worthwhile if they could rise above parochial politics.

“The selection of coach usually is handled by our technical team. We are a supervising ministry.' Dalung said, according to BusinessDay.
''We have little to do with the process but we have a role in guiding what is best for Nigeria. I have always maintained that if we cannot pay indigenous coaches, we still owe them some months of salaries, some of them have even died without those salaries.
“Do we still go and look for foreign coach and will he be able to tolerate us without salaries for some time more also that we may also be paying him in hard currency? So, it is a fundamental contradiction to swallow easily but there is one aspect of this indigenous coaching that has been responsible for the poor performance of football in Nigeria which Nigerians need to know.
“They have not been able to grow above their parochial sentiment. An example is that a coach will train a team, the team will qualify to go to the next stage, once it becomes international they will now submit a different list of people not the entire new people who qualified. This already has violated what is referred to as team spirit in football. A team that played is different from the one that is going. We have that crisis on our hands now, especially with the list of those who are going to Rio.
“Those who qualified are fundamentally different from those that have been sent to go and play at the finals. So, some people are only good to go and qualify and create room for others to go. That is one of the problems with indigenous coaching,”Dalung said.
Previous coaches of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, the late Shuaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi complained of being owed salaries at one point or the other during their tenure.

A few minutes later, the naira came to 260, which was the initial predicted position the CBN-FMDQ OTC guideline was planned to work with.

As at 2pm, the local currency was trading at the interbank market at 260.50 to a dollar, while the daily average holds at 247.

Meanwhile, the interbank trading which was scheduled to end at 2pm, was extended to 4pm in order to ensure some stability in the market before the close of the business  day.

It was gathered that the militants, numbering about 100, armed with guns and cutlasses, invaded the community around 11pm on Friday, killing every resident in sight.
Among the 15 killed was a technician, Waheed Buhari, aka Yah Alau, who was shot dead in front of his room.
One of his children, Mariam, sustained bullet wounds.
A travel agent, Mr. Oladele Ogundare, was said to be returning home in his car, when the rampaging militants opened fire on his car and killed him.
Another resident, Umoru, who was said to be eating noodles, was chased, hacked and shot to death, along with a friend, Danladi.
More than 25 shops in the community were looted by the militants.
A resident told Punch that the militants were suspected to be Ijaw youths involved in pipeline vandalism.
She explained that they were on a revenge mission as some operatives of the State Anti-Robbery Squad had killed two of the vandals earlier on Friday.
She said, “The whole thing began around 4pm on Friday. I was at the backyard of the hotel, cutting some weed when some SARS officers came in. They were shooting and ordering people to stop moving. There was confusion in the hotel.
“The SARS officials did not leave until after three hours. They killed two of the vandals and took away the owner of the hotel, a woman.
“Around 10pm, I went to urinate when I saw so many hoodlums coming from the waterside down the road. They carried sophisticated weapons and when they got here, they started shooting. They blew off the hotel windows and shot people dead. They killed two men here in Lapete village.”

While Buhari died, the daughter is still at the hospital. Two other unidentified corpses were found, making a total of three deaths.
“Information from eyewitnesses showed that the hoodlums were militants and they came from the riverine area. But we have not confirmed this, as investigations are ongoing. We are particularly interested in why they came in such a large number.”

Calabar Pastor Ties Children To Tree, Assault Them With Machete Over Alleged Witchcraft

Two children age, 10 and 7, were this morning, rescued from being murdered by some members of Divine Zion of God Church Ikot Abasi Effiom district of Akpabuyo LGA.
Led by one Prophet David Effiom Zion and some members of their family, the children were accused by their cousin of being witches and allegedly snatching her baby in a dream.
The stigma that confronted the children since they were branded witches took on a new dimension when the children were taken to the forest, tied to a tree, battered and assaulted with a machete by some members of the family, leaving them with cuts and bruises all over their bodies.
This happened on the heels of the screening of the movie ‘The Fake Prophet’ in Ikot Offiong Ambai community in Akpabuyo Local Government Area (LGA) by Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a child’s rights organization based in Calabar.

Machete wounds inflicted on the children by the Pastor and his cohorts

Respite came the way of the children when an uncle who arrived from town demanded the release of the children with threats of calling the police and on learning of BRCI’s visit, took the children to the venue where the movie highlighting issues of child abuse and witchcraft branding was being screened.
In his opening remark, the Secretary of BRCI, Barrister James Ibor noted that the movie screening was to mark the 2016 Day of the African Child, recounting the story of how the day was set aside by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) in 1991.
Speaking also, Theresa Okpa who is the Executive Director of Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF), the NGO of the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Linda Ayade said issues of child witch branding is abuse of the rights of children and assured that the Mediatrix Foundation is partnering with organizations like BRCI to address issues relating to the abuse of children’s rights.
In the same vein, Rev. Okon James, the Assistant Pastor of the Mount Zion Lighthouse Full Gospel Church Ikot Offiong Ambai, emphatically noted that their church does not promote the belief in witches and usually condemned any actions that abuse or torture children on the grounds of being a witch.
Meanwhile, the rescued children were later taken to the Community Health Center where BRCI paid the bills for them to be given proper medical attention, while ensuring that the uncle who rescued them temporarily keep the children in his custody.

"He threw gasoline on us and set us on fire" Some of the Nigerians repatriated from Libya open up about their perilous journeys

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Libya, assisted 162 stranded Nigerians migrants, including 28 women and 3 children, to return home to Nigeria from Libya. They arrived Murtala International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday June 16.
Of the group, 146 had spent months in immigration detention centres, namely Abu Saleem, Qarapoly and al Zawia detentions centres.
The repatriation, in close co-operation with the Libyan authorities, the Nigerian Embassy in Tripoli and the IOM mission in Nigeria, was on board a charter flight that departed Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport and arrived in Abuja the same afternoon. The repatriated migrants were received by IOM Nigeria at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and were provided with cash grants upon arrival. Of the group, 20 will be provided with some reintegration support.
Before departure all migrants were provided with hygiene kits, clothes and shoes. A mobile patrol from the Libyan Directorate of Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) escorted the buses to Mitiga airport.
The circumstances of this group were similar to the other migrants who were previously repatriated by IOM from Libya. Almost all the migrants traveling on this charter were detained after they were intercepted at sea, trying to get to Europe.
Some of the migrants who spoke to IOM explained why they felt compelled to embark on these perilous journeys.
Omar, a 19-year-old, tearfully told IOM of his ordeal. "I made it to Libya six months ago, and I settled in Garaboli city, 60 km east of Tripoli, with the intention of travelling to Italy, where  I was arrested by a militia member together with other migrants. He threatened to send us to prison if we refused to work for him. We worked at his farm, for no money at all. When we tried to escape he asked us to pay 500 dinars (USD 360) for our release. Then he put us in a room and shot at us with his gun. I was shot in the leg. He then threw gasoline on us and set us on fire. I was severely burned. I managed to escape from the farm and I was eventually taken to the hospital by police who found me lying on the side of the road."
Adama, a 38-year-old father of three, living with his mother, borrowed USD 5,000 –"“price of salvation trip", he called it. He arrived in Libya five months ago and spent three months in the detention center. "It does not matter which country, any country in Europe is a paradise for me and worthy of any risk to reach, even if the price is my life," he said.
Abdul, a 25-year-old paraplegic, said his physical condition did not prevent him from working as an auto mechanic in Nigeria, after dropping out of school, to help his parents and his brothers. However, he lost his job and struggled to survive. His frustration meant that he was easily convinced when his friends in Italy persuaded him that there would be plenty of opportunities for him under Italian disability laws. His journey was much harder than other migrants anyone else because of his condition. When he arrived in Libya, he was forced to work for two months in an electronic repair shop owned by a brother of one of the smugglers in Sabha (South Libya) to pay for his passage to Tripoli. Upon his arrival in Tripoli last February, he tried to find work to raise money for his passage on the boat.
He was however, arrested just two weeks after he arrived. "I chose the humanitarian repatriation although I’m sure that the situation at home is much worse. I have to face my family with empty hands after all that they spent to get me here in the first place. I hope the organization (IOM) will help in securing income same as it helped me to secure my return to my country," said Abdul.
Aicha, a 39-year-old mother of two, arrived in Libya five months ago via the desert. She had left her two children with her husband in search of a better life. She told IOM, "It was a long and hard trip where my life was threatened twice when I fell down from the truck between Agadez (Niger) and Al Qatrun (Libya) because of the huge number of migrants that were on the back of the truck. After my arrival in Tripoli, I found work as a maid in one of the connection houses – which is more like houses of prostitution. Eventually, I had to escape and began to think seriously about the return. Luckily I heard from a friend that IOM organizes voluntary repatriation so I registered with the embassy."
Despite their journeys of hope ending in detention centres, these migrants consider themselves lucky to have escaped death trying to cross the Mediterranean, which this year has claimed the lives of 2,438 migrants and refugees on the central Mediterranean route.
The fund for this charter was provided by the Swiss Secretariat of Migration, under the project "Provision of Humanitarian Repatriation and Reintegration for Stranded Migrants in Libya".

The Science of Sliding into DMs

The science of the slide is simple. All it takes is enough game to put Sony out of business and your inner Jay Z will be cruising with his B in no time. Grab a notepad, some juice and let’s school you on this simple yet highly abused process of sending dms.

1. The Research: Like every science experiment, a little research goes a long way in getting correct results. That’s why we beg you to take time out to study your future bae on social media before doing anything else. Find out what she likes to do for fun, where she usually hangs out or the causes she’s passionate about. This will go a long way in getting your conversations going, you churning out info on stuff she just happens to like.
Don’t overdo it though. Then, you’re playing with fire because she might suspect you know too much about her and it could land you in a lot of trouble. Speaking of which, before they say we’re training you to become a cyber-stalker, let’s move on to the second point…
2. The Request: So now that you’re fully knowledgeable about your subject, it’s time to make the first move. Send that request. Be sure that your profile pic is looking on point before you do, and your grid is in order. Plus, photos of exes have to go, you don’t want to give her the wrong impression.
Some people may suggest you make your account private and let your bio do the talking. It adds to the mystery, they say. Whatever feels right to you, go with it and patiently wait for the followback.
Note: Whatever you do, do not leave a “kfb” message in her comments. #DesperateMuch
3. The Introduction: She followed back! Like she had a choice lol. Now, for the plunge. First, do not DM her immediately. A gap of about two to three days should do. And secondly, be original. “Hello” is just you being lazy, and “Hello Beautiful” will get her defense system up faster than you can say Jack Daniels. Instead, say something nice about her last photo’s caption, the scenery or maybe the outfit she wore in it. That’s sure to get her attention and warm her up to you. Then she replies…
4. The Conversation: By this time you’ve successfully slid into her DM like a pro. Clap for yourself. This step is the tricky part though because it’s one thing to attract and another to retain, especially when it comes to getting ladies. Avoid asking 21 questions in an attempt to keep your conversation going. And don’t tell her your life story, please. Or ask for her number! Just be patient.
5. The Hookup: Weeks have passed and she’s a lot comfortable with you, so now is the time to strike. From asking for her number to skipping steps and asking her out, the rest as they say is Instagram history. You’ve done well and deserve to enjoy your victory’s spoils. #RelationshipGoals

While in June: Android N developer preview 4 (with final APIs and SDK) and we are expecting that in July: Android N developer preview 5 (near-final build) then within the month of August/September: Final Android 7.0 AOSP build.

Currently, we have not concrete name for this update, Google has sometimes opted to do smaller iterations for the updates. For example, Android 4 had 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.1 Jelly Bean and 4.4 KitKat. Samsung hasleaked out it might be called Android 7. Within its source code for its MultiWindow SDK 1.3.1, it reads “This version has been released with Android N(7.0) compatibility.”

Google didn’t announce the big number at IO. So we don’t know for sure.
Among the Android 7.0 or N and the Android Marshmallow, which one do you love?

He’s been in the business of spinning for 15 years, and isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The one and only Benedict Afagwu is a dominant member of the movement that’s making DJing an art. A lover of hip-hop since the 90s, he’s currently a resident DJ at a popular radio station in Lagos.

5. DJ Sose
If you ever spot a white guy with a tattoo on his face DJing at a club, you’re probably enjoying the sounds of the mastermind, DJ Sose. Though he looks foreign, he’s actually the son of a Nigerian. He’s travelled across the world and currently DJs for the hit show, Highlites with IK.

6. DJ Spinall
Not many DJs are bold enough to mix a wide range of music, placing this DJ in a unique league of his own. He’s worked for almost everyone too like Channel O Africa and Wande Coal, to name a few. And how can we forget to add his international status, performing across 6 states in the US on his recent tour – CAPUStour. Looking forward to what the future holds for this rising star.

7. DJ EniMoney
When Olamide is your big brother, how can you not be bahd too? DJ Enimoney, whose real name is Eniola by the way, is blazing the trail in his own space and making a name for himself in the industry. He is the official DJ of the YBNL nation with a mixtape under his belt called Gapa. When asked if he would ever leave YBNL, here is what he had to say,“You can’t do anything to sign me away from YBNL, it is family to me. No amount of money can make me leave YBNL as long as it’s still running.” Interesting, right?

NEITI Report: Nigerian Senate sets anti-corruption record

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) did not remit $12.9bn to the federation account between 2005 and 2013,” Waziri Adio, executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), said on Wednesday.

Adio made this revelation before a packed chamber of the Nigeria senate. The NEITI boss, who was speaking on the agency’s 2013 audit report of the oil and gas sector, was the first to be accorded the honour of making a presentation on such a matter before the upper legislative chamber in the present democratic dispensation.

He later expressed the historicity of the occasion in a series of tweets on his twitter handle- @waziriadio. “Thanks, Your Excellency for giving us the rare opportunity to address @NGRSenate on this very critical national issue,” Adio said in reference to Senate President Bukola Saraki “We are grateful for the opportunity granted by SP @bukolasaraki and distinguished senators to brief @NGRSenate today on @nigeriaeiti reports.
“This is historic, being the first time @nigeriaeiti's reports will be taken seriously by NASS. We welcome the committee set up by @NGRSenate.
“We hope this marks a real turning-point in fixing the deep gaps in our extractive sector. Thanks again to SP@bukolasaraki.”
Indubitably, by its action in adopting the report and setting up a committee to look into it, the senate has set a record in the war against corruption. Among other revelations, the NEITI boss asserted that Nigeria was only sure of the amount of crude oil it exports, but could not say the quantity of the commodity it produces.

He explained that the lack of accurate information on the actual quantity of crude oil Nigeria produces was compounded by the absence of a proper metering system.
"In 2013, the country produced 800.3 million barrels and out of that the country made $58.07 bn and that represents an eight percent reduction on the $62.9bn that the country made in 2012," he said.
"The second issue is that there are some monies that were withheld, lost or underpaid for different reasons.
"These monies are in three tranches. The first is in the category of the unremitted, and the unremitted amounted to $3.8bn and N358m.
"The second category is the category of losses, because of some inefficient practices and theft among other things, the country lost $5.9bn and N20bn.
"Under the category of the under-assessed the country lost $599.8m.
"When we look at the unremitted $1.7bn is still being owed the federation for OMLS.
"Also, $1.29bn from the NLNG dividends and N351bn from unpaid domestic crude debt, N2.17bn from cash calls refunds.
"Those are the monies we have established that should have been paid to the federation and were not paid.
"The second category of losses by NNPC and its subsidiaries. Out of the $5.9bn, N4.7 bn was lost to theft and vandalism.
"N20bn was lost because the NNPC did not observe the 90 days credit grace and when you look at the time value of money, if you calculate at 12 percent interest the country lost N20bn.‎
"Some of the issues in the report. The first is about the assets divested by NNPC to NPDC. NNPC between 2010 and 2011 divested eight assets that belong to the federation to its upstream subsidiary NPDC. So NNPC divested 55 percent of the shares being held on behalf of the federation to the NPDC.
"These eight OMLS are valued at $1.8bn by DPR. NPDC paid only $100m out of the $1.8bn meaning there is an outstanding of $1.7 bn, and even that $100m was paid two years after.
"What this means is that NNPC lifted oil on behalf of NPDC not on behalf the federation despite the fact that NPDC has not fully paid for those assets.
"Another issue that came out of the audit is the NLNG dividend. NLNG in 2013 paid $1.28 bn, but the money was not remitted to the federation account.
"Beyond this between 2005 and 2013 NLNG paid $12.9bn to NNPC and NNPC acknowledged receiving it, but the money was not remitted to the federation account.
"Another is the losses incurred from swap and OPA. This is the arrangement where NNPC exchanges crude for product and the country lost $518m due to the inefficiency of the swap and OPA.
"$211m was lost to product swap and $306m was lost to OPA.
"N1.3trn was posted for petroleum subsidy in 2013. It was 30 percent higher than the total for budget education, health, water and SURE-P.
"We found out that we have infrastructural deficit- the country can only say what it exports and cannot say authoritatively what it produces.
"This has always been an issue and the audit confirms that we still don’t have meters where we should have them.
"This lack of metering has serious implication for revenue and national security‎."
Speaking after the presentation, Saraki assured Adio that the senate would take action on the recommendations in the report.
"I can assure you will discuss this report fully, and we will take action. We will task the executive to prosecute those who are culpable," he said. ‎The senate president, thereafter, set up an ad hoc committee chaired by Jibrin Barau, a senator from Kano state, to look into the report.
Saraki directed the committee to turn in its report in four weeks‎.

Breaking News: Civilian JTF kill 2 suicide bombers near CBN quarters

The onslaught against Boko Haram terrorists has continued to yield positive result as two suicide bombers were shot dead by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).

According to Sahara Reporters, the two male suicide bombers strapped IEDs to their bodies and stormed Kusari area near CBN Staff Quarters in Maiduguri this morning, Friday, June 17. However, they were gunned down before they could detonate the bomb.

Massa Umaru who is a member of Civilian JTF who participated in the operation said the suicide bombers were likely targeting early morning prayers at a nearby mosque. The bombers were reportedly queried by the vigilante elders when they sighted them but instead of responding to question, they fled. Umaru said: “Our elders sighted them in our community roaming around, so they called them and tried to know their identities because their faces were strange to us. Instead, they started running, and we pursued them, shot and killed them. There were IEDs wrapped on their bodies that did not yet explode.“We thank Allah for saving us from the evil men that had wanted to wreak havoc on residents of Maiduguri. It could have been deadly if they hit their target,” Troops of the Nigerian army have condoned the area while stability is being restored.

Chelsea retain Mikel, Omeruo, Moses

The Premier League have announced players released and retained by their clubs for the 2016/17 season. John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo have all been retained by Chelsea for next season.
The news represents a silver-lining for Moses and Omeruo, who have had different loan spells since joining the Blues.
Omeruo spent time on loan at Turkish top-flight side Kasimpasa last season and he has since returned to Chelsea where he is touted to get a chance with new manager Antonio Conte at the helm of affairs.
Omeruo has also been rumoured to be on the radar of newly promoted Middlesbrough, who want the centre-back at the Riverside on loan after he spent time with the then Championship side two years ago.

Moses is also in the mix for the new season, but it is not certain yet if he will be part of Conte’s plans. The winger was on loan at West Ham United last season and at Liverpool the previous season.
The former Wigan ace is likely to be farmed out yet again to another club for next season as he struggles to replicate the form that saw Chelsea splash out to acquire him from Wigan Athletic.
Mikel has also been retained and may likely see out another season at Chelsea.
The Nigeria captain has been linked with Chinese and Turkish clubs, but it remains to be seen if he will end his 10-year association with the London side or stay put for another season.
Other players with Nigerian heritage retained in the Chelsea squad include Dominic Ayodele Solanke, who played at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem last season, Ugbo Ike and Tomori Fikayo while negotiations are still ongoing with Olu Aina for a new contract.
Chelsea finished the 2015/16 in 10th place with 50 points from 38 matches.
